ESEA
Type: Academic Full Name: Elven Southern Expeditionary Association Founded By: Ronaela Astarise Nation(s): Othaala (crown-endorsed, Lumen-based)
Overview
The Elven Southern Expeditionary Association, founded in Lumen in 305 c.e. during the Conception Era, was a crown-sponsored organization of Elven explorers, cartographers, botanists, biologists, and scientists tasked with charting the largely unmapped southern and southeastern regions of the continent. Its founding was driven by a gap in geographic knowledge; the interior south, the swamplands, the cliff valleys, and ultimately the future territories of Almania remained uncharted. The ESEA filled that gap over the course of nearly a century of organized expeditions.
Goals
Cartographic survey and naturalist documentation of the southern continent, opening potential settlement routes, and producing scientific literature on the flora, fauna, and terrain of unexplored regions for the Otanllani crown and National Senate.
Key Members
- Ronaela Astarise — founder and primary leader; led the organization from its inception until her independent southern departure in 392 c.e. and death in 10 w.e.
- Tsella Aanistre — from Suvrra; Ronaela's second-in-command, who assumed leadership after Ronaela's death from a Wyvernal attack and ultimately called for the organization's disbandment
History
The ESEA was formally founded in Lumen on the 21st of Szanirerf, 305 c.e., with its first camps raised in the reedlands southeast of Waretho. Over the following decades, it cut extensive paths between the western coast and the Collavajaen River, completed swamp mapping by 311 c.e., reached the northeastern corner of the Sea of Novobriskia by 341 c.e., and issued multiple hazard memoranda warning travelers away from the dangerous eastern Yavathre Plateau and Slovaera Mountains.
Most significantly, the ESEA's surveys of the cliff valley along the Collavajaen River led directly to the discovery of the Grand Olbaerd Tree in 365 c.e. and, through the crown's subsequent settlement authorization, the eventual founding of Kaedoa in 400 c.e.
In 378 c.e., the ESEA successfully lobbied the Otanllani crown and National Senate to mandate geography and survival classes at all major colleges in Othaala.
In 392 c.e., Ronaela Astarise grew dissatisfied with the organization's northward drift, a frustration given the word "Southern" in the name, and departed alone to fully map the southern swamps and the land that would become Almania. During this solo expedition, she discovered all Five Wyverns, survived multiple attacks, and established positive contact with Thurva. Her findings were eventually compiled into the book Ronaela, published under the crown's name in 4 w.e.
Ronaela died in 10 w.e. from burns sustained during a Valevyr attack, passing leadership to Tsella Aanistre. Following a second assault on the southern encampment, the surviving members returned to Knaema, deposited their research with the University of Knaema, and the ESEA was formally disbanded via board vote in 12 w.e.
It directly inspired the later Human Exploration Organization (HEO), a joint Nabatia-Godalosvia initiative founded in 15 w.e.
Notes
- The ESEA issued two major Plateau Hazard documents: the original memorandum (362 c.e.) and the Plateau Hazard Codex II (419 c.e., published posthumously under other leadership or legacy documentation).
- Ronaela Astarise authored Ronaela, a foundational text later added to the Book of Nasariane.
- The ESEA's discovery of the Grand Olbaerd Tree is its most lasting geographic contribution.
